Remember, that negative voice ('I'm not good enough') is not the truth. Rather, it's tapping into some belief you have about yourself and who you are. Beliefs can be changed. Your inner-dialogue can be re-written. Confidence almost ALWAYS starts with finding another script that's more helpful. Presence is NOT the same as charisma (which might look good on the surface but doesn't always have substance underneath). Connection with others is the key to presence. Connection that engages, inspires and takes others with you. Presence is NOT loud, shouty or 'look at me'. Notice those leaders around you that have presence - the leaders you trust, respect and want to follow. What can you learn from them? Assertiveness means being clear on what you want and need whilst valuing the other person's wants and needs too. Your first step? Start to prepare and practise ways of communicating more clearly. Build up a toolkit of useful phrases that help you feel confident. And finally.... study the great communicators you know - the ones who genuinely inspire and engage you. It's something I struggled with personally all my life so made it my mission to learn the neuroscience AND the practicalities of confident conversations. Next time you have a 'difficult' conversation looming, start to plan the outcome you want and the opening lines (it's important to practise so you get the language and tone right). Then commit to really listening to the other point of view. Work towards a solution together and learn some strategies to manage yourself and your emotions - deep breathing and speaking slowly work for me. Find something that works for you, too. Q5 or Topic 5 Biggest Gap FeedbackKey 5 - Managing ConflictSome people avoid rocking the boat and stay silent. Others do the opposite - fight, shout and battle for position. Neither leads to success in the long term. The 'fight, flight, freeze or appease ' response may feel safe initially but at what cost to you and those around you? Many of us learned how to deal with conflict (or not deal with it) in our early years and those responses are no longer helpful to us. Healthy debate in your team is great and should be encouraged as long as you're working together towards the 'greater good'. But finger pointing, blaming, whingeing and moaning are pointless, energy sappers. Managing conflict starts with changing your own script so you can help others change theirs.
